What You Need to Know Before Buying A Static Caravan

March 2023

There are plenty of benefits of caravan ownership, but it’s likely to be one of the biggest investments you’ll make. For this reason, you’ll need to understand some key aspects of holiday home ownership so that you can really get the most out of your caravan and maintain it for as long as you have it. Here are some key areas for you to become clued up on before buying a caravan.

Don’t rush

Probably the most important thing to consider is that this will be your holiday home. This means that everything should be suited to you and your needs, right down to the buying process. Our Park Managers and experienced sales team have sold to thousands of buyers and know their stuff when it comes to static caravans and lodges. Listen to what they have to say – even if you don’t end up purchasing a caravan from us at this time, you’ll go away with new knowledge and information on the buying process and what kind of holiday home will be best for you when you do take the plunge.

Payment options

As we’ve mentioned above, investing in caravan ownership is a big investment, so it’s important that you consider the financial aspect. You may be in a position to purchase your holiday home in full – great! If not, there are other financial options available such as caravan finance (talk to us about our options) or third-party finance.

Insurance

Insurance is one of the easiest factors of ownership for new owners to dismiss. The fact of the matter is you need insurance. Even if it wasn’t an option, it’s one worth taking. It’s your property, a large investment and, as our holiday homes are not for residential use – you won’t be with your caravan 365 days of the year. For more information regarding insurance, get in touch with all of our caravan sites to check the requirements.

Annual costs

When you purchase a holiday home with us, we’ll be completely transparent about the running costs you will incur. Many of these costs will be covered within a park fee but utilities such as water, gas and electricity will be paid for by you, separately to any park fees. Take the time to ask questions about how the metres work and ensure you understand the forecasted costs and ensure you turn off any appliances that use energy before you vacate after each visit.

Surroundings

You could have the best caravan – one you’ve dreamed about, but it will mean nothing if it’s in a location you don’t like. Don’t fall for prioritising what you stay in rather than where you stay, as this will ruin your experience. When judging your surroundings before you buy, it isn’t just about the location; it’s everything you encounter when you step out of your holiday home – from the facilities on-site to the overall friendliness of the place. Don’t be afraid to talk to our Park Managers and other owners and ask questions to get an overall view of the experience of owning a caravan on park.

Buying a caravan

You’ve found the best caravan, at the best holiday park for you. Fantastic! But now’s the time to go through the process of purchasing your new holiday home, and you’ll need to know what you need. If you’ve opted to pay for your caravan via finance, you’ll need to provide proof of ID – this will most likely be a copy of your photo ID (like a driving license or a passport) and two documents which provide proof of address (such as bills and bank statements). Once your purchase has been confirmed, you’ll receive a welcome pack, copies of your official paperwork and a copy of the park rules and conditions.
