We get it. The weather, the outdoor swimming pool, the complete change of surroundings which gives you the break you’ve needed all year. Although a holiday abroad may feel like the more desirable option, what’s wrong with making the most of what your home country has to offer?
If you take the time to look, everything we’ve mentioned before can be found here in the UK. Here are just some of the advantages that a staycation has over a trip overseas.
One of the biggest misconceptions about the UK in recent years has been that the weather doesn’t cut it in comparison to typical holiday destinations like Spain and Greece. While these countries enjoy much better weather all year round, it’s a different story come summertime. In 2022, the UK enjoyed a summer that was much warmer than normal, including an enormous heatwave which swept the country. Given that it was a similar story in 2021, it’s no wonder that us Brits are expecting the same temperatures year on year for the foreseeable. Just because your staycations of the past were full of rain doesn’t mean your memories should cloud your judgement this time!
Don’t be fooled by your flight times. It may say that its only 2 hours to get to Barcelona but that’s not including the time spent travelling to the airport, checking bags in, going through customs, and waiting for your flight – that’s if your flight doesn’t end up being delayed! Not to mention the fact that you have to repeat that process as soon as you land. Here’s what you have to do if you want to travel to your staycation: get in your car and go. It’s that simple. Also, in case of any emergencies, you can travel back at any given time. You’re well and truly in control of your destiny while on a staycation.
As you look out of the window from your plane seat, you’ll be met with blue skies stretching as far as the eye can see. Although this can be incredibly relaxing, it robs you of seeing all the places you’re passing at ground level. By flying, you miss out on the total holiday experience, stopping off at places you find along the way and creating memories with whoever’s travelling by your side. In Britain, there’s plenty to see on your journey. Mountain ranges, rivers, places you would never think of – and that’s just the journey, so imagine how good it’ll be when you get to your destination!
A holiday shouldn’t just be about getting away and taking a break; it could also give you a unique opportunity to go and visit family who are living elsewhere in the country. Meeting your loved ones also offers a welcome sense of familiarity to your surroundings, and a free tour guide isn’t something to be sniffed at.
By saving on travel, accommodation and any other preparations needed for a holiday abroad, you’ll be able to focus on making the most of your staycation. Better yet, the money that you do end up spending will be pumped into the UK economy in a cost-of-living crisis, therefore supporting smaller businesses at a time where they need it most. Spend your spare cash on visiting local attractions, visiting independently owned restaurants, cafes and bars or doing something adventurous.
