The Best Ways to See Sealife in Wales

July 2023

Surrounded by water with Britain’s longest river running through it, Wales is a haven for marine life. With the Bristol Channel to the south and the Irish Sea to the north, you’ll never be short of glorious sights that stretch as far as the eye can see. If you don’t happen to catch any of the wildlife that lives beneath the surface, there’s a number of brilliant places to visit during your holiday that are full of wonder and fun for all ages.

SeaQuarium Rhyl

North Wales’ largest aquarium, SeaQuarium is home to the only underwater tunnel in the region, giving visitors the opportunity to experience what life is like ‘under the sea’. See all the wonders of the sea, including stunning sharks, friendly rays and many more. Located on Rhyl’s seaside, SeaQuarium also has an outdoor seal cove, where you can watch them play in their own 330,000 litre pool.

Anglesey Sea Zoo

If you’ve ever wondered what sea life looks like across the whole of the UK, this is the perfect place to find out. There’s so much to do and explore at Anglesey Sea Zoo, with over 40 species of marine animals to see, including octopus, lobsters, eels, and jellyfish. There’s plenty for children to do as well, with a playground, crazy golf course and a coin operated jet blaster all on site to keep everyone entertained.

Cardigan Bay Marine Wildlife Centre

Set in an area that’s rich in aquatic wildlife, Cardigan Bay’s Marine Wildlife Centre gives everyone the opportunity to enjoy the local sea life. Inside the visitors’ centre, there’s plenty of information and displays to learn about all local marine life and how the centre is working towards preserving the future of the sea life. For a first-hand glance, head out into the bay on a boat trip. Enjoy sights of local birds and seals and cross your fingers in hope of seeing the bottlenose dolphins. The centre is free to enter and open 7 days a week until the end of October.

Ocean Lab Aquarium

The Ocean Lab Aquarium brings the Welsh waters to visitors, including a wide variety of local marine creatures. Take a guided tour with an expert, who’ll show you around the aquarium, equipped with plenty of interesting facts and tips on where to view local seals and dolphins. Children can get up and close with all sorts of sea animals, getting to touch starfish, anemones and small crabs.
