Are you ready to reopen your holiday home in 2023?

February 2023

It’s nearing that time again. You’ve patiently waited throughout the winter months, itching to get back on the road and head straight to your caravan. But before you’re ready to enjoy your holiday home, it’s important to make some checks to ensure nothing has gone wrong while you’ve been away.

Here are some checks you should make when you walk through your caravan doors for the first time this year to ensure it’s your best season ever!

Spring clean your space

If you haven’t been in your caravan for a while, it will naturally collect dust and potentially even some cobwebs. Dusting off those winter cobwebs is one of the first chores you should complete when you step back in for the first time this year, making all surfaces nice and clean. If you don’t want to waste precious time cleaning when you could be relaxing, you could contact a local cleaning company to come and do the job for you.

Check smoke alarms

The last thing you want in your caravan is for something leak or set fire so it’s important to check your smoke alarms for peace of mind. You should look to prevent any fires in the first place, which could be caused by lightbulbs and cooking appliances. Ensuring your locks aren’t faulty should also be a priority, so pay attention to your doors for when you need to leave.

Check for winter damage

It’s more than likely that your caravan won’t be in the spotless condition you left it in – after all, you haven’t been there to look after it! Here are the key things you should look out for to identify winter damage:

  • Mould: As a result of no regular maintenance, both mould and mildew may appear on your caravan’s walls. When you return to your holiday park, check behind furniture and appliances for any spores that may appear. If you do find any, treat them with the appropriate products and open the windows to prevent any more from developing. Another way to keep the mould away is to invest in a dehumidifier, which clears the air without sacrificing on the warmth of your holiday home!
  • Exterior damage: Welsh winters aren’t like any other in the UK – they can be brutal and may cause damage if given the chance. However, the damage done while you’ve been away from your caravan may not be as obvious as you’d think. Before you unlock your front door, take a walk around your caravan, checking for any breaks in seals, cracks, or general bodywork issues.
  • Water Supply: There’s nothing worse than a cup of tea made with non-fresh water! When you re-enter your holiday home, it’s advisable to run your taps for a little while to help bring new water through. This will also give you the chance to check if your faucets are in perfect working order.
