Best Cycling Routes in Mid Wales

February 2023

When travelling to Wales, we know you’re not here just to stay in your caravan. You’re here to explore, to see the natural beauty that Welsh Landscapes have to offer. With around 2,000 square miles to see, you’d be forgiven for not getting round to seeing it all!

However, it’s worth weighing up how you’re going to get around Powys. Walking is a great and active way of exploring but you don’t see as much, and although you cover enough ground in the car, it’s just not the same. Cycling in Wales is the perfect solution. In this article, we’re going to show you some of the best trails for you and your bike to tackle while you’re staying at your holiday home in Wales.

Radnor Ring (National Route 825)

It’s very rare for you to go round in circles and find something new as you make your way round the loop. The Radnor Ring is an 84-mile route, guiding you through the stunning views that the heart of Wales has to offer. Although most of the cycling route is in Wales, there are moments where you’ll find yourself crossing over into England, as the eastern section of the trail veers across the border along the way. From Presteigne to Rhayader, you’ll constantly be surrounded by scenery that will blow you away, whether it be a glorious mountain range or a quaint little village.

The Cambrian Coast Sportive

Located near many of our caravan sites, the Cambrian Coast Sportive (CCS) is the perfect event to get involved in. The CCS has different routes for different participants. There’s the shorter ‘Fun Route’ for families who just want to cycle along the Aberdovey coastline, or there’s the ‘Big Dog’, which covers over 100 miles, climbing over 3000 metres. This route is not for the faint hearted, passing through Snowdonia and circling back round to where you started. If you’re looking to test yourself or just do your best, the event is being held on Saturday 16th September 2023.

Barmouth and the Mawddach Valley (National Route 8)

Mid Wales has become a bit of a hub for cycling holidays in the country. Popular tourist destinations like Barmouth have caught on, especially following the development of Wales’s Trans cycle routes in recent years. We’ve picked the 10-mile trip from Barmouth to Dolgellau, and along the traffic free trail you will find stunning views when cycling down the Mawddach Valley, with its 1,000 metres tall, wooded hills towering above you. This cycling route in Wales offers a mere taste of the gorgeous scenery that this area has to offer.

Machynlleth to Fishguard (National Route 82)

A cycling route that will only get bigger and better in the future. This part of National Route 82 is still under construction, as the actual destination goes past the coastal town of Fishguard and to one of Wales’ most beloved holiday destinations: Aberystwyth. However, this isn’t to say that the current route isn’t worth taking, as you’ll be cycling through quiet roads and old railway lines.
